Exam Pattern for CAT Examination – Sections, Questions and Timings
The exam pattern in the CAT exam is quite different from most entrance exams in the country. For one major difference, the sections in the CAT Examination are locked which means that candidates cannot simply jump between sections. There is a specific time limit allocated to each section, once it is over you need to go to the next section. You are also not allowed to go back to a previous section.

Sections
The sections of the CAT Examination include:

  1. Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability
  2. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
  3. Quantitative Aptitude

Questions
The CAT Exam features a total of 100 questions. These are meant to test your abilities in the various given sections. The division of questions for each section is as follows:

  • Section 1 ->34 Questions
  • Section 2 -> 32 Questions
  • Section 3 -> 34 Questions

CAT Exam Timing
During the CAT Exam, you are not allowed to be jumping around sections as mentioned above. Therefore, giving the CAT Exam is quite like giving three individual exams at once. Here each section is allocated an hour for completion, which makes the total exam duration equal to 3 hours. If the student does not hit submit within the hour, the answers get automatically submitted.

Fees for the CAT Exam
The Registration Fees for the CAT Exam are Rs. 1800 for General and OBC Candidates, while Rs. 900 for SC/ST/PWD candidates and are non-refundable. After clearing this, you can directly get admission in IIMs without any extra fees or process. For other business schools, you would need to apply separately and the fees could cost between Rs. 750 to Rs. 2500.

What Should You Study for CAT 2023?
The syllabus for all three sections of CAT has never been clearly defined and hence has been made from using the previous papers.

In the Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability Section, you can practice from any good book relating to grammar and comprehension. It will mostly feature Paragraph Jumbles, Sentence Exclusion and Summary. Questions on Correct Word Usage, Fact Inference Judgement, and Sentence Correction have also been asked in the past.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a well-defined syllabus for the Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning Section. Hence, the best way to study for this section is by practicing previous years’ question papers.
