Indian Air Force as a Career After 12th class

The need of the hour is maintenance of peace, law and order within one’s geographical boundary. It is quintessential for any country to always be vigilant about own internal security and establishment of law and order within the territory. There are three wings in defence services. The three of them are namely Indian Army, Air Force and Navy. The Indian Air Force is the world’s largest air force that is responsible for assisting the civil administration during internal security disturbance and also for securing national territory, maintenance of law and order and organizing rescue operations during the occurrence of natural disaster.

As a future career prospect

Information about joining
There are three branches in which you can join namely Technical Branch, Flying Branch and Ground Duty Branch. Young men can join it after passing their 10+2 or 12th, graduation, engineering and postgraduate degrees. Moreover, women can also join only as Officer Cadre after completing their graduation, engineering, and post-graduation. The Airmen cadre and technical or non-technical field jobs that are available is meant for 10th passed or matriculation and below matriculation candidates.

Pilot in Indian Air Force:
There are four ways through which students can become an Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot.
1.    National Defence Academy (NDA),
2.    Combined Defence Services Exam (CDSE),
3.    NCC entry
4.    Short Service Commission Entry (SSC)

1 to 3 are considered to be permanent commission, the last one is a temporary one. One can join NDA after completing Class 12. For other courses, candidates should be a graduate to apply.

National Defence Academy (NDA):
To join the ‘Flying Branch’ of IAF, candidates should appear for National Defence Academy (NDA) exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).  After qualification,  the student undergoes a three years training at NDA followed by flying training at Air Force Training Establishments. After completion of the training, candidates are commissioned as ‘Permanent Commission Officers’ or can be posted as Pilots at any IAF Station.

Combined Defence Service Examination (CDSE):
UPSC conducts CDSE exam for Men who aspire to become a Pilot. After qualifying the CDS Exam, candidates are entitled for admission to Indian Military Academy/ Indian Naval Academy/ Air Force Academy (AFA). Rest of the pathway is the same; NDA training, followed by training in Air Force Academy. With completion of training, candidates will be getting the Permanent Commission Officers’ or can be posted as Pilots at any IAF Station.

National Cadet Corps (NCC) Special Entry:
Candidates having Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ Certificate holder is eligible for National Cadet Corps (NCC) Special Entry. The joining will be done through the Directorate General National Cadet Corps or through the respective NCC Air Squadrons. This is the special entry case where the candidates will be given ‘Permanent Commission Officers’ post.

Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT):
Air Force Common Admission Test – AFCAT is open for both male and female candidates. This test is conducted by IAF for admission to Short Service Commission (SSC) for a term of 14 years. These candidates are hired on technical branches and Ground duty branches. This examination is conducted twice a year.

Medical Requirements
Apart from essential qualifications there are some necessary requirements that need to be filled in medically. Those are enlisted below:-

•    Sound health and free from ENT (ear, nose and throat) infections.
•    Must have government specified Physique parameters.
•    Should be free from heart or blood vessel functional diseases.
•    Mentally fit with normal blood pressure
•    Good binocular vision without any color blindness.
•    North Eastern regions of India, Garwahal or Kumaon or Gorkha are exempted from height parameters as set by the government.

Training Centers for in service personnel or new recruits
After you clear all the essential aspect to cross the gateway of IAF, you will send to be trained by professionals for three years. Indian Air Force (IAF) has established many training centers for training new comers. Technical and other ground support staff gets their training at various ground training schools. On the other hand, the pilots are trained at the Air Force Academy located at Dundigal, near Hyderabad, Telangana.

Post-service facilities
The IAF personnel will get many benefits even after being retired such as canteen facility, pension plans, health scheme and education facility for kids.
