Law Admissions in Punjab: Courses, Colleges, Criteria, Eligibility and Counselling
Admission to Law Courses of Institutions/Colleges affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Punjabi University, Patiala is done by Centralized Online Counselling conducted by the allocated university each year. Punjabi University Patiala conducted the counselling process in the year 2019.
The admission process for these colleges is usually notified by the Government of Punjab in the month of March each year. Once notified, the university responsible for conducting the counselling releases the prospectus detailing the admission process.
Law Courses available for admission
The Candidates can seek admission to B.A. LL.B. (Hons) Five Years, B.A. LL.B Five Years, LL.B Three Years, LL.B (Hons) Three Years, B.Com. LL.B. Five Years, B.Com. LL.B. (Hons) Five Years and B.B.A. LL.B Five Years Courses in the Departments/Colleges/Regional Centres of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjabi University, Patiala and the colleges affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjab University, Chandigarh and Punjabi University, Patiala and situated in the State of Punjab.
Duration of Law Courses
Usually one can join a five year law program after class 12. Three year law programs are available to join after graduation. The five year program could be an integrated degree like BA LLB.

Division of Seats
85% of the seats are reserved for the candidates from within the State of Punjab and 15% seats are open to candidates of other States/U.Ts on the basis of merit of CET prepared on all India basis excluding Punjab.
Management Quota Seats:
· 15% of the seats out of 85% state quota seats in un-aided Private Self-Financing institutions shall be treated as management quota and shall be brought out of the purview of centralized counselling to be conducted by the University.
· The management of the institute shall fill up management quota seats as per the procedure prescribed in the said notification.
· The management quota seats will be filled up only after the third counselling is over as per the notified schedule.
Army Institute of Law, Mohali seats
· Out of 80 seats of B.A.-LL.B. (5 Years) in Army Institute of Law, Mohali, 16 seats of Punjab Residents of Civil Category will be filled up through centralized online counselling.
· There will be no Entrance Test for these seats.
· The remaining 60 seats of wards of Army Personnel and 4 seats of All India General Category will be filled up on the basis of merit of the candidates in the Written Entrance Test conducted by the Army Institute of Law, Mohali by conducting Online written test.
· The reservation policy of the Punjab Government shall not be applicable to 16 seats of Punjab Residents of Civil Category.
Law Admission in Punjab: Eligibility
The candidates are advised to check the eligibility norms of the Bar Council of India and those prescribed by the respective Universities carefully before applying for admission. The candidates are solely responsible for their choice.
The candidates are advised to check their eligibility and read the eligibility requirements, general conditions etc. as provided in the state notification issued by the
Government of Punjab for the year of admission. Every candidate claiming reserved category must indicate the reserved category claimed.
Minimum marks for admission in Law Colleges in Punjab
The minimum percentage of marks should not be below 45% of the total marks in case of general category applicants and 40% of the total marks in case of SC and ST applicants, to be obtained for the qualifying examination, such as +2 Examination in case of
Integrated Five Years’ Course.
The minimum percentage of marks should not be below 45% of the total marks in case of general category applicants and 40% of the total marks in case of SC and ST applicants in the respective graduate program for the three years’ LL.B. course, which is done after graduation in any subject.
Minimum Age for Admission in Law Colleges in Punjab
There is no Age Bar as per the order of Hon'ble Supreme Court of India

45% in case of general category applicants and 40% of the total marks in case of SC and ST applicant(s) is required.
The applicants who have obtained 10+2 or equivalent through open Universities system directly without having any basic qualification for pursuing such studies are not eligible for admission in the law course.
Educational Qualifications for Admission to Three-Year LL.B.
Graduation/Post-Graduation in any faculty from any university of Punjab or Chandigarh or any equivalent examination from any other statutory university by securing at least 45% marks for general category and 40% marks in case of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and physically handicapped candidates.
Admission Process for Admission in Law Colleges in Punjab
In Punjab, except Army College of Law, all other admissions are done directly. In other words, they are based on your marks obtained in the qualifying exams. A process of normalization is used before the final merit list is made. Once the merit list is made, then admissions are done in colleges. The entire process is online and involves filling up of the counselling forms. The process is given below:
Online submission of application form
1. The application form is to filled up at University website: www.pupadmissions.ac.in. The Direct link for choice filling is http://law.pupadmissions.ac.in
2. Counselling fee is deposited online through Net banking/ Credit/ Debit card or through HDFC Bank Pay-In-Slip in any branch.
3. No application form submitted by post/by hand is accepted and the candidature of such candidates for centralized counselling are automatically rejected.
4. Students are advised to remember their User Id and Password as the same may be needed at the time of counselling.
Salient Features of Counselling
· There are three rounds of counselling.
· It’s a Direct Admission; there is no entrance test for Law Admission for the above-listed colleges.
· The choices in order of preference as well as marks are filled up in the online application form.
· The eligibility of the candidate and his/her original documents are checked by the institution in which the candidate is allocated seat at the time of admission. Thus, allocation of seat does not entitle automatically the candidate to get admission to the course. This will be subject to checking of his/her original documents and his/her eligibility at the institution level in which he/she is allocated the seat.
· The candidate will be solely responsible for the wrong supply of information online or otherwise. The student should check his/her eligibility carefully and should supply all the information correctly; else his/her application form for allocation of seat will stand automatically rejected. Also, incomplete application forms will be rejected.
· Candidates applying for the reserved category shall carefully indicate the claim for only one category in the online admission form to be submitted to the University in the first instance before the start of counselling. No change of category will be entertained/permitted at the later stage in the application form.
· In case a student shifts from one institution to the other during second/third Centralized Counselling his/her fee shall be refunded by the previous institution after deduction of Rs. 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only) as the processing fee.
· Candidates will be admitted in the respective institutions on the basis of the seats that will be allocated through centralized counselling by the University.
· 16 seats from Army Institute of Law, Mohali will be filled up by the above listed direct admission counselling
Entrance Exams for Admission to Private Law colleges in Punjab
Some private Law Universities and colleges in Punjab conduct their own entrance exams. Some of these colleges consider the marks obtained in the nation level exams e.g. CLAT, LSAT etc for admission to the course in their own college. Thus it is very important to check the admission criteria of the institution, in which one is desirous of obtaining admissions to know the admission process.
