National Institute For Design or NID is a premier design institute in India. NID is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and research. The Business Week, USA has listed NID as one of the top 25 European & Asian programmes in the world. The institute has been declared ‘Institution of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute of Design Act 2014.
National Institute of Industrial Design (as it was previously named) was established with the help of Ford Foundation and Sarabhai family at Ahmedabad, in September 1961.Till today the Institute believes in the philosophy of the Bauhaus design movement of 'Learning by doing'. This premier, autonomous institute is also recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India.
This is the main campus of NID and NID when founded was located here. It was founded in 1961. Ahmedabad is the largest city of Gujarat! This is referred to as the Main Campus.
As part of expansion plan, NID has built a new postgraduate campus at Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat State. This is called the Post Graduate Campus. It consists of a jewellery and automobile design centre along with lifestyle accessory design, new media design, toy and game design, strategic design management, transportation and information design centres.
NID's R&D Campus at Bengaluru was set up in March 2006. R&D Campus commenced with two research intensive PG Programmes namely Design for Retail Experience and Design for Digital Experience, from the academic year 2007-2008. Currently five Master's programmes are offered from this campus.
All NID campuses are open to visitors throughout the year from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (apart from public holidays). Visitors will have to obtain a Visitor's Pass at the Main Gate to enter the campus. If you are visiting us in a group with prior appointment, NID can arrange Guided Tour of Campus.

NID’s entrance exam Design Aptitude Test (DAT) which is also popularly called the National Entrance Examination for Design (NEED) is one of the most regarded entrance exams for design in India and also one of the most difficult ones along with IDC’s CEED.
There is no particular syllabus to prepare for DAT or NEED and the questions are framed on basic topics like Communication Skills, Composition, Creativity, Drawing Skills, General Mental Ability, Sensitivity to Environment and Subjects of Design.
Both B.Des and M.Des Design Aptitude Tests (DAT) comprise of two phases, the first being a written test and Phase 2 being a Studio Test
Phase 1: This 3-hour test is for 100 marks and the questions are both visual and textual in type. The test is conducted to gauge the candidate’s aptitude for Design Problem Solving, Visual Sense, Observation & Perception, Environmental Awareness, Mental Ability and Communication Skills.
Phase 2: Phase 2 comprises of a Studio Test followed by Personal Interview and Portfolio Presentation. The Studio Test is further divided into 3 parts- Doodling, 3D Modelling and Observation Test.
Phase 1: This 3-hour test is for 100 marks and consists of two parts, both of 1.5-hour time duration. Part A is a Common Foundation Paper for 40 marks and Part B is a Specialization Paper for 60 marks. The test is conducted to gauge the candidate’s aptitude for Design Problem Solving, Visual Sense, Observation & Perception, Environmental Awareness, Mental Ability and Communication Skills.
Phase 2: Phase 2 comprises of a Studio Test followed by Personal Interview and Portfolio Presentation. The Studio Test is further divided into 3 parts- Doodling, 3D Modelling and Observation Test.
B.Des and M.Des exams are conducted in 12 exam centres as of now. The list goes as follows: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Nagpur. This list might change and information will be available on the website.

The masters in design will open doors to all the industries, be it software or hardware, at India or abroad. The students who are artistic, have a talent for giving their thoughts a form and putting it on paper, words, slides or any other medium, are ready to learn new things daily, with a will to change how the world looks, should go in for Designing in any of the fields provided by NID.
NID organises Industry Interface annually to provide a meeting ground where the prospective employers and students meet for recruitment in their organization. This event also creates awareness among the industries / firms / studios/ NGOs. / Govt. Sector / MSMEs about NID and its various modes of operations.
Students are encouraged to pursue opportunities in areas such as social communication, service sectors, technology enhanced learning, Craft Design, Green Design, Universal Design, and Experiential Design. The quality of education received by NID graduates has contributed to their success at various levels across diverse segments of the economy; their works and ideas have been duly acknowledged nationally and internationally.
