The job as a radio jockey is very exciting and full of fun and new experiences. Radio jockeys and video jockeys are very talented people. Radio jockeys entertain the audience through playing music, delivering news, hosting various programs with famous guests on the radio. And the video jockeys are the announcers who play music videos on TV shows and introduce them as well. An aspiring student wanting to pursue their career as either radio jockey or video jockey needs to be charming, confident, and spontaneous personality. Skills required to become a radio or video jockey:

The job of radio jockey or video jockey seems to be easy but it is very difficult indeed. Talking continuously and engaging people is not a very easy thing to do. And that is why a radio or video jockey requires some skills that are very important for the fluency of the job. The required skills are –

Courses to become a radio or video jockey:

The field of video or radio jockey is still very new in India, and for that reason, there is no formal education available. Only some institutions provide various courses in bachelor’s courses or diploma courses. Courses related to radio jockey are discussed below:

Eligibility criteria:

To become a renowned radio jockey or a video jockey, students must fulfill some eligibility criteria that are mentioned below:

1.      To apply for diploma and certificate courses, students must pass their 10+2 final exams with a minimum passing mark.

2.      A student needs to score at least 60% marks in their graduation level having any academic background to apply for postgraduate diploma and diploma courses in Radio Programming & Broadcast Management.

Admission process for the courses:

The institutes providing the courses have different rules and regulations to choose students who want to pursue these courses. Some colleges take direct admission based on their marks scored in the intermediate results. Most of the colleges in India, follow this method. There are some other colleges which conduct an entrance exam to take the admissions of the students. The institutes judge the candidates based on their marks scored in the entrance exam.

The Encompass Institute of Radio Management conducts an entrance exam to take admissions of aspiring candidates. Some other institutes host their entrance tests like - XIC Online Entrance Test, A.J.K. Mass Communication Entrance Test, IIMC Entrance Exam for PGD in Radio & TV Journalism, etc.

Career scope as a radio or video jockey:

The demand for radio jockey or video jockey is very high in the media and entertainment sector. There are a lot of private radio sectors like – Radio Mirchi, AIR, Big FM, Times FM, Red FM, Radio Wani, etc. These radio channels hire talented and promising radio jockeys.

Nowadays new music channels are being launched every now and then. With these releases of music channels, demand for a video jockey is also going upwards. VJs mostly play music videos and music-related shows. The top employers for a VJ are – MTV, Channel V, B4U music, MCM Asia, etc.

Salary of the job:

At the very beginning, a radio jockey can get a salary between Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 4 lakhs per year. With increasing experience, skills, and popularity a radio jockey can earn up to 10 lakhs to 15 lakhs per annum.

On the other hand, a video jockeys’ salary is also appreciable. They can earn 3 lacs to 5 lacs per annum initially. After getting known and famous, the salary goes up.
