Eligibility Criteria for Admission to the Ph. D. Programme :

Master’s Degree holders should satisfy the following criteria –

  • Candidates for admission to the Ph. D. programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) / Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

For M. Phil. Degree holder candidates –

  • Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated programme. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
  • A person whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. programme of the same Institution.
  • Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

    Application Form Filling Instructions

    Guidelines for Scanning the Photograph, Signature and Documents

    Before applying online, a candidate will be required to have a scanned (digital) image of his / her photograph and signature as per the specifications given below. Your online application will not be registered unless you upload your photograph and signature as specified. Please make sure you also have the scanned image of the required documents.

    Photograph (Image):

    Photograph must be a recent passport size colour picture. The picture should be in colour, against a light-coloured, preferably white, background. Look straight at the camera with a relaxed face. If the picture is taken on a sunny day, have the sun behind you, or place yourself in the shade, so that you are not squinting and there are no harsh shadows. If you have to use flash, ensure there's no "red-eye". If you wear glasses make sure that there are no reflections and your eyes can be clearly seen. Caps, hats and dark glasses are not acceptable. Religious headwear is allowed but it must not cover your face. Size of file should be between 40KB•60KB. Ensure that the size of the scanned image is not less than 40KB more than 601<3. Ifthe size of the file is less than 40K3 or more than 60KB, then adjust the settings of the scanner such as the DPI resolution, no. of colours etc., during the process of scanning.

    Signature (Image):

    The applicant has to sign on white paper with 31ack Ink pen. The signature must be signed only by the applicant and not by any other person. If the Applicants signature on the answer script at the time of the examination, does not match the signature on the Attendance Sheet the applicant will be disqualified. Size of file should be between 1 OK3-20KB. Ensure that the size of the scanned image is not less than 10KB and not more than 200.

    Document (Image):

    The scanned image of the document should be clear and easily readable. Ensure that the size of the scanned image is not less than 40KB and not more than 100KB.

    Scanning the Photograph, Signature & Document (s):

    Set the scanner resolution to a minimum of 200 dpi (dots per inch). Set Color to True Color. File Size as specified above. Crop the image in the scanner to the edge of the photograph/signature/document then use the upload editor to crop the image to the final size (as specified abov4 The image file should be JPG or JPEG format. An example file name is: image01 .jpg or image01 .jpeg Image dimensions can be checked by listing the folder files or moving the mouse over the file image icon. Candidates using MS Windows/MS Offce can easily obtain photo, signature and document in .jpeg format by using MS Paint or MS Office Picture Manager. Scanned photograph, signature and document in any format can be saved in -jpg format by using 'Save As' option in the File menu and size can be reduced below 60KB (photograph), 20KB (signature) & 1 OOKB (document) by using crop and then resize option [Please see point (i) & (ii) above] in the 'Image' menu. Similar options are available in other photo editor also. If the file size and format are not as prescribed. an error message will be displayed. While filling in the Online Application Form the candidate will be provided with a link to upload his photograph, signature and document(s).

    Procedure for Photograph, Signature & Document (s):

    There will be separate links for uploading Photograph, Signature and Document(s). Click on the respective link to upload Photograph, Signature and Document(s). 3rowse & Select the location where the Scanned Photo and Signature file has been saved. Select the file by clicking on it. Click the 'Continue' button to upload.

    Other Information :

    • No application other than Online application will be considered.  
    • Persons working in Govt./Semi-Govt./Public Sector Undertaking must apply through proper channel. A No Objection Certificate from the present employer shall be attached.
    • Proof of belonging to SC or ST or OBC-A or OBC-B [of the State of West Bengal] or Persons with Disability [PWD] must be submitted along with the filled-in Application Form and no claim in this regard will be entertained afterwards.
    • Incomplete application shall not be considered.
    • A print out of the online application form along with two copies of the recent passport size photograph (identical with the same uploaded in the online application form) and other documents regarding qualification, and experience etc. duly attested by the candidate must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar / Office of the Secretary, Faculty Council for PG Studies in Arts, Commerce & Law and Science, NBU at the time of verification. Date(s) to be notified later on after admission.
    • The University shall not entertain any application after the last date and shall not be responsible for any delay.
    • The University shall reserve the right to cancel the process of admission to M.Phil./Ph.D. programme of the abovementioned subject(s) without showing any reason whatsoever.
    • Application form not properly filled-in or incomplete in any respect or without requisite documents will be summarily rejected.
    • Willful suppression of any material fact will also be similarly dealt with.
    • Application fee once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.
