Four-year undergraduate courses and faster PhDs

The central government is emphasizing on bringing revolutionary changes in the higher education system. In this sequence, a new four-year undergraduate program has been introduced. The University Grants Commission (UGC), the regulatory body of higher education in the country, will issue the notification of the new rules for PhD Admission along with the syllabus for the studies to be completed in four years. This will have a direct impact on lakhs of students who want to pursue higher education.

The 160-credit program will replace the existing three-year Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) at the undergraduate level. Students will get an opportunity to join PhD course directly after completing this four-year degree programme. The decision was taken by the UGC in its meeting on 10 March. Under this, students who have completed four-year course with research will now be able to directly enroll in PhD programme.

The undergraduate degree will be of three or four years. Students will have the right to choose which of them. During this, they will get many opportunities to exit the selected course and get admission in any other course. This will also bring flexibility in the course and duration of Master's and PhD degrees. Those passing the four-year undergraduate program will be eligible for admission to the one-year master's degree program and direct Ph.D.
