National Institute Framing Network (NIRF) recently announced their ranking and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has taken the crown from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, in the overall category of best institute. IISc still holds the topmost rank in the best university category. Among the top 10 institutes, seven positions were bagged by IITs, in the overall category.
IIT Madras has excelled because of its strong devotion towards research along with skillful teaching and learning facilities. IIT Madras and IISc, Bengaluru are two such institutes that have been at par with each other since a few years now, in the fields of research and publications.
These institutes prefer faculty having doctoral qualifications (PhDs), so that the teachers focus on teaching as well as research. Similarly, the top institutes in NIRF ranking lists like other IITs, Delhi University (DU), NITs, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) etc are all research oriented. Many universities and colleges that participated in this ranking system had zero publications and hence stood nowhere.
Research is the key to development of newer technology and henceforth, the nation. The institutes should hence formulate guidelines, have well qualified faculty and promote research so as to keep ahead in the race. This in turn will certainly make for a progressive India.
It is being noticed that lot of medical and engineering colleges in the government sector are not doing any original research. This fact is evident from the number of original articles being published from these institutions. It is imperative that funds should be allocated for research activities and incentives should be given for original research. Promotions should also be linked with research published and this should be a criteria for all colleges of all disciplines in India. We should be competing with the best in the world, rather than amongst our own.
