In a view to solve the problem of shortage of doctors in our country, Niti Aayog has come up with a solution. It has proposed to start a bridge course in which the Dentists or the Dental Surgeons could learn to practice Family Medicine. As the first three years of the curriculum of dental courses are the same as that of the MBBS courses, hence this move may likely cater to the shortfall of medical practitioners in India, especially in the rural areas.
Several meetings to discuss this proposal have already taken since 2016 and to further discuss its feasibility the think tank of Dental Council of India and Medical Council of India will meet with the Union Health Ministry on April 22, 2019.
The previous proposal of a similar bridge course for AYUSH practitioners had been opposed by the think tank.
