50 MBBS seats each were increased at Government Medical Colleges (GMC) in Amritsar and Patiala in 2014. But state government failed to comply with the guidelines laid down by the Medical Council of India (MCI) to make these seats permanent. According to MCI guidelines both the colleges had to fill the vacant faculty posts.
Seats were increased from 150 to 200 in these colleges in year 2014. As the standard procedure of MCI, it inspects the colleges annually for next five years, till the first batch with the increased seats passes out. If the college complies with the guidelines then only seats are made permanent.
To retain these seats, the government should have completed the recruitment process of faculty before the notification of the new session. MCI has to notify the number of MBBS seats in the month of May before the NEET UG exam, but completion of the recruitment process by the state till then would not be possible since the model code of conduct is in effect until May 23.
In the current scenario, the ball is lying in the court of the MCI. These GMCs are likely to lose 100 MBBS seats permanently. The future of many medical aspirants is, hence, at stake.
