Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2020 or Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2020 is the entrance examination for admission to Civil Services Examination. Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2020 is conducted by Union Public Services Commission.

Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination for the year 2020 has been announced by Union Public Services Commission and will be held on 04/10/2020. The application forms will be available from 12/02/2020 till 03/03/2020. The exam is in written mode. The duration of the exam will be 120 minutes. It is being conducted in English and Hindi languages. The result date will be announced later.

Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2020 Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility Conditions:

  • For the Indian Administrative Service, the Indian Foreign Service and the Indian Police Service,  a candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • For other services, a candidate must be either
    • a citizen of India, or
    • a subject of Nepal, or
    • a subject of Bhutan, or
    • a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

Age Limits:


  •  A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of  32 years on the 1st of August, 2020 i.e., he must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1988 and not later than 1st August, 1999. Necessary action to make corresponding changes in respective Rules/Regulations pertaining to various services is being taken separately. 
  • The upper age-limit prescribed above will be relaxable
    • up to a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe;
    • up to a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates;
    • up to a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Services Personnel, disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof;
    • up to a maximum of five years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned
    • Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st August, 2020 and have been released;

Minimum Educational Qualifications :

The candidate must hold a degree of any of educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a  University Under Section-3Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other

    Test Centre Details: 

    • The information of the Test centre allocated is provided along with the admit card.
    • It includes the address of the centre.
    • One should locate the centre on Google Maps.
    • It is a good practice and strongly advised to visit the centre one day before to know about the time taken to reach the centre. By doing so one can reach well in time on the examination day. It prevents wastage of time trying to locate the centre and thus avoids the stress created if the centre is not easy to find.

    Candidates (excepting Female/SC/ST/Persons with Benchmark Disability Candidates who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay a fee of Rs. 100/- (Rupees One Hundred only)

    Application Form Filling Instructions

    Steps in Filling up the application form:

    Step 1

    • Go to the Official site.

    Step 2

    • Click on “ONLINE APPLICATION FOR VARIOUS EXAMINATIONS OF UPSC”  link.
    • Candidate must provide Correct Name, Date of Birth, Mobile Number and Email Address as these details cannot be changed once the registration is complete.

    Step 3

    • Click on the Part 1 registration given against Notice no 05/2020-CSP&  05/2020-IFS. This will lead you to the Part 1 Registration Form. The candidates must read the instructions carefully and must agree that he/she has read them. The Part-I Registration is done in 2 steps in which the applicants have to fill in the requisite information, particulars and details asked for.

    Step 4

    • The applicant must fill all the required fields. Fields with red STAR (*) marks are mandatory and essential to be filled in by the applicant. 
      • Name as recorded in the Matriculation/Secondary Examination Certificate.  Please do not use any prefix such as Mr. or Ms. Etc. unless it consists of only 3 letters as 4 letters are mandatory for the NAME field.  When you enter your name more than 30 characters in the name column, then Full Name column automatic display below to facilitate the abbreviate name. Now you can abbreviate your name within 30characters and fill the abbreviate name in Name column. Do not forget to send a signed written request to Joint Secretary (Examination), UPSC, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi 110069 by Speed-post or by Fax (011-23387310) giving details of the full name and reasons for abbreviation in this regard; otherwise your application/ candidature may be rejected at a later stage.

    General Instructions for filling up the Application Form

    Candidate applying for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2020 have to fill up the application form on the official site.

    A student can submit the application for only once; multiple forms will be rejected.  

    The submission is ONLINE only.  

    Requirements to be readied before you start filling up the Application Form of Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2020

    • FEE PAYMENT (Female / SC, ST &PwBD Candidates are exempted from payment offee)
    • EXAMINATION CENTRE for Civil Services (Prelims) HAS TO BE CHOSEN FROM THE AVAILABLE DROP DOWN MENU.
    • UPLOADING OF PHOTOGRAPH, SIGNATURE and PHOTO ID.

    Candidates are not allowed to make any corrections at a later stage after submission of an application. O correction is entertained via post, fax, email or by hand.

    The Usual Steps in filling up the Online Application Form of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2020

    Step-1: Students have registered for the Online Application Form. Login and Password are created. 

    Step-2: Student has to complete the Application Form and its various sections  

    Step-3: Required documents in the form of Scanned Images of Candidate’s Photograph, Candidate’s Signature and Left Thumb Impression.  

    Step-4: Payments have to be made by Debit / Credit Card / Net Banking.

    Important Instructions Application Process

    • All steps have to be completed before you can submit the form.
    • Incomplete forms will be rejected.
    • No correspondence is allowed on incomplete submission of the form.
    • No request for remitted fees is entertained

    Important Instructions for withdrawal of Application

    • Candidates are advised to go through the instructions carefully before filling up the request for withdrawal of application.
    • The Commission has provided the withdrawal facility from 12-03-2020 to 18-03-2020 to those candidates who do not want to appear at examination.
    • Candidates are advised to provide the details of registered application with registration-id which was completed and submitted finally. There is no provision for withdrawing of incomplete applications.
    • Before making the request for withdrawal, candidate must ensure the availability of registered mobile number and email-id as provided while submitting the application. Request will be accepted only after the confirmation by validating the OTP details sent on candidate's mobile and email, such OTP will be valid for 30 Minutes. In case the OTP is not received within 10 Minutes resend option is also available.

    • Request for generating OTP for withdrawal of application will be accepted only till 5.30 PM on 18-03-2020.

    SYLLABI FOR THE EXAMINATION : 

    NOTE : Candidates are advised to go through the Syllabus published in this Section for the  Preliminary Examination and the Main Examination, as periodic revision of syllabus has been done in several subjects. 

    Part A—Preliminary Examination :

    Paper I - (200 marks)

    • Current events of national and international importance
    • History of India and Indian National Movement
    • Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World
    • Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, 
    • Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives,
    • General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity, and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization
    • General Science

    Paper II-(200 Marks)

    • Comprehension
    • Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
    • Logical reasoning and analytical ability;
    • Decision making and problem solving;
    • General mental ability;
    • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders Of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data
    • interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. — Class X level);

    Note 1 : Paper-II Of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.  

    Note 2: The questions will be Of multiple-choice, objective type.

    Note 3 is mandatory for the candidate to appear in both the Papers Of Civil Services (Prelim)  Examination for the purpose Of evaluation. Therefore a candidate will be disqualified in  case he/she does not appear in both the papers Of Civil Services (Prelim) Examination.)

    MOBILE PHONES BANNED:

    • The use of any mobile phone (even in switched off mode), pager or any electronic equipment  or programmable device or storage media like pen drive, smart watches etc. or camera or blue tooth devices or any other equipment or related accessories either in working or switched off mode capable of being used as a communication device during the examination is strictly prohibited. Any infringement of these instructions shall entail disciplinary action including ban from future examinations.
    • Candidates are advised in their own interest not to bring any of the banned items including mobile phones/pagers to the venue of the examination, as arrangement for safe keeping cannot be assured.
    •  Candidates are advised not to bring any valuable/costly items to the venue of the examination,  as safe-keeping of the same cannot be assured. Commission will not be responsible for any loss in this regard
