How to Calculate the Percentile Score of a Candidate?
Here are the steps which are meant to be followed to help one calculate the CAT 2019 score for both the overall and percentile scores. While we demonstrate the calculation process, we will be using the QA section as an example. The same process will be followed for the other sections – DILR and VARC, and also for the overall percentile score of the candidate in CAT 2019.
CAT 2019 Score Calculation
Step 1. You will need to calculate the total number of candidates. Let’s call it ‘n’. This should include candidates from both morning and afternoon sessions.
Step 2. Take the scaled scores obtained in the QA section, and on the basis of this, you must assign a rank ‘r’ to all the candidates. If two or more candidates have the same scaled score, assign the same rank to them.
As an example, you can consider that two candidates obtained the highest scaled score in the QA section. In this case, both the candidates will be assigned the rank 1 each. Furthermore, the candidate with the second-highest scaled score will be assigned the rank 3.
Step 3. Calculate the percentile score ‘P’ of the candidate with the help of n and r. Use this equation given below:
P = ((n-r)/n) x 100
Step 4. You can take the percentile score P and round it off up to two decimal points.
As an example, consider that percentile scores that are greater than or equal to 99.995 are rounded off to 100. The scores which are greater than 99.985, but also less than 99.995 are rounded off as 99.99.
A similar method is used to calculate the overall CAT percentile scores for the candidates, and also to calculate their percentile scores for other sections.
