German Student Visa: A complete Guide for Indian Students

 

In recent years, the number of Indian students choosing Germany for their education has increased. Germany provides a unique learning experience for the students. The way of living, teaching and working practice could be new concepts for Indian students. Indians are the second-largest group of international students in Germany. Around 60,000 Indian students apply for admission each semester. To live, stay and study in Germany, you will require a national visa known as a student visa. After searching for the desired course and university and submitting their application form, students should wait for their response. If accepted by the institution, students should apply for a visa.

 

Visa requirements

  • If you plan your course to have a duration of up to 90 days, you won't need a German student visa, but you will need a Schengen Visa.
  • And if you are planning for a course with a duration of more than 3 months, you need a German National Visa.
  • After entering the country, you need to extend your stay by getting a German Residence permit for studies at the foreigner's office. You must complete this procedure within the validity of your entry visa.

 

 Documents required to apply for a German Student Visa

  • A valid Indian passport.
  • Two or more copies of a passport photo with personal information.
  • German national visa application form must be submitted by students with other scanned documents.
  • A letter of acceptance received by the university is also mandatory to submit.
  • The language instruction for the courses should be clearly mentioned in the application.
  • A certificate of language proficiency (at least B2 level) is mandatory.
  • Academic qualifications and certifications are also required.
  • You can also attach your resume stating your purpose for staying in Germany.
  • Evidence of financial support is required to submit, saying whether you can afford your life in Germany or not.
  • It is recommended to get travel health insurance for Indian students provided by DR-WALTER.
  • An additional declaration of contact and legal representation information may be required.

 

Steps to Apply for German Visa in India

  • Schedule an appointment for the Visa in the embassy and reach there before time with all the mentioned documents.
  • The German Embassy is situated in different cities in India like- New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai.
  • Applicants are required to get a demand draft for paying the Visa fee.
  • Submit the required documents, and in interviews, your purpose of the study and staying period in Germany will be asked.

 

 Booking time for an appointment for a German Student Visa in India

  • The German Embassy in New Delhi takes up to 10 weeks.
  • The German consulate general in Kolkata may take up to 1 one week.
  • The German consulate general in Bangalore will take 2-3 working days.
  • The German consulate general in Mumbai takes up to 2 working days.
  • The German consulate in Chennai may take up to 2 working days.

 

Application Fee and Time

  • The German application fee will be around 75 Euros and will be paid by demand draft mode of payment after finishing the Interview at Embassy or consulate.
  •  It could take up to 15 days to 6 weeks to process a Student Visa. All other German student visas are usually processed within 3 months.

 

Post Arrival at Germany Procedures followed by Indian Students

  • They have to register their address, activate their blocked account, register themselves for health insurance, and get their resident permit.
  • You are required to open a bank account in Germany using your German resident address, and now your money will transfer from your blocked account to your German bank account. You will also receive your debit card or Giro card to access your money.

 

Blocked Account Details

A blocked account is a special bank account required for international students to study in Germany. Money is deposited to cover financial issues in Germany while staying there. It will also act as proof of financial resources when applying for German student visas.

You need to open your blocked account as soon as you receive your acceptance letter from your university. You can also open this account from your home country. The mandatory amount to be deposited in a blocked account is 10,300 Euros, and a student can withdraw 861 euros per month.

Resident Permit in Germany

As you reach there, you will have your permanent address in Germany, and within a week of your arrival, register yourself at the president's office. After successful registration, you will receive confirmation.

Documents required to register in Germany as an International student 

  • Valid nationality passport or national ID card and valid Visa.
  • Rental contract documents.
  • Letter of confirmation of your living address issued by the university (if staying on the university campus) or landlord (if staying outside the university campus).

 

Other types of German Student Visa

  • A German student visa is required when an international student applies to a university to pursue their degree or higher education.
  • German student application visa- is required to be in Germany and apply for the university. Its validity is only up to the university application process.
  • A German language course visa is required when one is seeking to learn a German language course in Germany.
