Healthcare Facilities in India

India as a destination for overseas international students to study in India is fast becoming very popular. At any given time, there are more than 160 colleges and Universities in India offering education to international students. More than 600 medical and dental colleges in India also offer medical and dental graduation seats to Non Resident Indians children. IITs under DASA scheme also offer opportunity for children from other countries to come and study engineering in India. At any given time, more than 50,000 students from other countries are studying in India and the number is on the rise.

One of the information, these overseas students are seeking is about the healthcare structure in our country. Indian health delivery system is well distributed across the country and present in abundance in all cities and towns, where almost all the educational institutions are located. The health system is also available in smaller hamlets and in the rural areas; thus making it safe to travel to all nooks and crannies of the country.

The healthcare system is divided into government run hospitals and dispensaries and Private Hospitals, Nursing homes and Clinics. The Government system is well equipped but very crowded and at times the hygiene and comforts associated with hospitals is lacking!
However, the cost of taking treatment at government run hospitals is almost negligible. Most of the times, the medicines have to be purchased at your own cost. In the rural belts, primary health care facilities are available and then the patient has to be referred to a nearby urban hospital.

The private healthcare system is well distributed within the country and in aplenty. These facilities are better built and equipped with the latest equipment. However, one has to pay much more than government hospitals in these facilities. These private hospitals are well connected with health insurance companies of almost the entire world and if you happen to be medically insured, you are well taken care of by the insurance service providers.

For small ailments almost all major universities and colleges have their own dispensaries and adjoining markets have pharmacies selling medicines. Medicines can also be procured from online medical shops and delivered at your doorsteps.

Almost all major hospitals, both government and Private run excellent Emergency and Trauma services and are well linked to national ambulance services. The private hospitals have their own ambulance services too. Noting down a few contact numbers for such emergency services in your city is recommended. 108 is the national ambulance call phone number, but at times this service may not be available because of great rush.

All in all, your health is well taken care of in India and you as a student can be reasonably assured for good medical services in the city of your abode. It is recommended to take a health insurance before you travel to India. So learn in peace and enjoy your stay in India.
