IGNOU Post Basic BSc Nursing (BScN(PB) Course
The Indira Gandhi National Open University was established in 1985 to develop and promote distance education in India in various different disciplines. The idea was to setup learning facilities remotely in various fields in the realms of higher education.
School of Health Sciences also called SOHS was created with the objective of augmenting educational avenues and provide in-service training for medical, nursing, paramedical and allied personnel through the distance education mode. Post Basic BSc Nursing programme is one of the most popular program in nursing stream of IGNOU. Each year lacs of candidates apply to get admission to the Post Basic B.Sc Nursing course of IGNOU.
Eligibility for IGNOU Post Basic BSc Nursing program:
- Available for in-service nurses
- One must be a registered nurses and registered midwives (RNRM)
- One must have cleared 10+2 .
- One must have three years Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM)
- Minimum two years experience after registration as RNRM.
- A Male nurse, who has not done midwifery in GNM program, should have a certificate in any of the Nursing courses of 6 to 9 months duration.
- These courses should be as prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council in lieu of midwifery.
Who else can also apply for IGNOU Post Basic BSc Nursing program
This course can also be done by in-service Nurses (RNRM), who have passed 10th class (Matriculation) or its equivalent as well as cleared three years Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM). Experience required is a minimum of five years after registration as RNRM.
If the nurse is a male and who has not done midwifery in the GNM programme, he should have a certificate in any of the nursing courses of 6-9 months duration as prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council in lieu of midwifery.
IGNOU Post Basic BSc Nursing Program Structure
This program has 22 courses and all the courses are compulsory who want to obtain Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing Degree. To complete the Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing Programme student will have to earn 108 credits spread over a period of 3 to 5 years. One credit is equivalent to 30 study hours.

Admission Process for IGNOU Post Basic BSc Nursing Program
For admission to the IGNOU Post Basic BSc Nursing course, one has to apply and take the OPENNET entrance exam. Though IGNOU holds this exam twice a year for its two sessions, the admissions for Post Basic BSc Nursing is done only in the January session.
Students who want to apply for the Post Basic BSc Nursing course at IGNOU will have to apply for OPENNET entrance exam. The process for applying is online.
Admission/Selection Procedure for IGNOU Post Basic BSc Nursing Program
- Admission is done region wise.
- It is based on merit in common entrance test i.e. OPENNET
- Counselling and admissions is also region wise.
- Candidates can opt for any Program Study Centre (PSC)s for Post Basic BSc. Nursing Program
- Application forms are submitted through online portal of IGNOU website
- Entrance Test is conducted by Student Evaluation Unit (SED).
- Result is also processed by SED.
- Merit Lists are made region based and are different for each region.
- Counselling is conducted by the Regional Centres (RCs).
- Once counselling is done, students are admitted and offer letters are sent.

- Candidates are required to apply and submit their Entrance Test forms online.
- This form is on the official site which is www.ignou.ac.in.
- Programme Study Centres for Post Basic BSc Nursing are located in Regional Centres only.
- Entrance test is conducted on the scheduled date in the centres all over the country.
- Entrance test has 120 multiple choice questions
- Each is of one mark each.
- Syllabus includes various subjects taught in GNM.
