National Institute of Technology (NITs) is the leading autonomous public technical and research university located in India. All NITs are autonomously linked to the other through a common council that oversees their administration, and all NITs are funded by the government of India. The minister of human resource development is the ex officio chairperson of the NIT council. These institutes are among the top-ranked engineering colleges in India and have one of the lowest acceptance rates for engineering institutes around 1 to 2 percent. As of 2020, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs is 233,506 and for postgraduate programs, 13,664 in all the 31 NITs put together.
The NITs along with the IITs receive comparatively higher grants than other engineering colleges in India. Average NITs funding increased to 100 crores. All NITs receive 20-25 crores under the world Bank-funded technical education quality improvement program. The academic policies of each NIT are decided by its senate. This comprises all professors of the NIT and the student representative. It controls and approves the curriculum, courses examinations, and results in appoints committees to look into specific academic matters.

Bachelor Degree
The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree is the most common undergraduate degree in the NITs concerning student enrollment. To get admission to any undergraduate program you have to clear the JEE MAINS exam. The B.Tech program is based on a 4-year program with 8 semesters while the dual degree and integrated courses are on a 5-year program with 10 semesters. In the first year, a common course structure for all the students through some NITs a single introduction related courses are also included. Few NITs also offers 5-years Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) and 4-year Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degrees. From the second-year onward the students study subjects exclusively from their respective departments. In addition to these, the student has to take compulsory advanced courses from another department to broaden their education.
Master Degree
The NITs offer a number of postgraduate programs including Master of Technology (M.Tech) Master of Business Administration (MBA) Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Master of Computer Application (MCA). Some NIT offers an M.S. program the M.Tech and M.S. are similar to the US universities, and in engineering are using scores of GATE exam There are 14 NITs which have separate departments of schools of management offering master's degrees in management or business administration. NIT Arunachal Pradesh also offers an online MBA program and M.Tech in Appropriate Technology and Entrepreneurship, which is perhaps the only one among the NITs.
Bachelors-Masters dual degrees
The NITs also offer a B.Tech and M.Tech integrated educational program which is known as “DUAL DEGREE.” It integrates undergraduate and postgraduate studies in selected areas of specialization. The Integrated Master of Science (M.Sc.) program is also offered at few NITs which integrates the undergraduate and postgraduate studies in science streams in a single degree program against the conventional university system. These programs were started to allow NITians to complete postgraduate studies from NIT rather than having to go to another institute. NIT Rourkela and NIT Agartala have such a system.
