Chemistry is now an additional subject for engineering course

AICTE announced Chemistry will not be mandatory for Engineering Course

A new rule has been made by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The new rule says that the Chemistry will not be the mandatory subject for admission into B.Tech and B.E courses.

This move will help thousands of more eligible students to get admission into the engineering courses in India. And this will be allowed in colleges all over India.

After this change, the students who have completed their higher secondary with Physics and Mathematics along with the additional subject which includes Biology and Biotechnology will also be eligible to get admission into the engineering courses from the next academic session. Presently Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are the compulsory subjects for engineering streams.

Sources said that from the new academic session in 2020-21, Physics and Mathematics is going to be mandatory to pursue B.Tech and B.E degrees, students having any kind of optional subject will be eligible for the admission, according to the technical education regulator.

AICTE has sent a letter to all the recognized engineering colleges regarding the optional subjects and changes in the optional subjects, now the optional subjects are Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practice, Agriculture, Engineering Graphic and Business Studies, by which students can get admission in the Engineering colleges of India.

The admission process is the JEE (Main) Exam which is conducted by the National Testing Agency, by which students take admissions in most of the engineering colleges. Some of the states have their own admission process for admission to engineering colleges.

The AICTE officials hope that this year, the move will help the students in those states but next year onwards. The changed norms are also likely to reflect in JEE (Main).

“We are hoping that this year, this move will help students in those states but next year onwards the changed norms are also likely to reflect in JEE (Main).”

There are around 3,000 institutions that offer 13.2 undergraduate degrees in engineering and technology, currently. The number will increase in doubles if some courses like architecture, design, planning and town planning will be included.
