The MCI has been working to adopt a new policy for providing reservation to those medical aspirants who belong to the Economically Weaker Section. For this, the medical regulator had put a proposal to increase the number of seats in Government Medical Colleges and all those colleges who were in the stage of renewing their permission. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with the Medical Council of India had planned to offer this quota of 25% in the coming two years, probably by 2020. But the regulator has asked the colleges to provide a 10% reservation to EWS from this academic session by increasing their respective number of seats by 10%. According to the rule of Indian Medical Council (IMC), to increase the seats the colleges have to provide the prescribed faculty ratio and infrastructure, strictly. Changing their stand, the IMC has asked the concerned colleges to give an undertaking by 7th June 2019, which states that they would provide this 10% reservation and would fulfil the requirements by August 2019, i.e. the start of the academic session this year. Thus, in the 216 Government Medical Colleges in India, which have a seat pool of 30500, there will be an increase of 3000 seats approximately. This is certainly a reason for the EWS to rejoice.
