26 departments of higher education institutions in India ranks among the top 100 in the world

According to the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, there are 26 departments of higher education institutions in India ranks among the top 100 in the world, in their respective subject category. 

Last year there were 21 departments who scored this rank. Coincidentally, all the 26 departments are in those institutions which are run by the Union Government, those are IITs, IIMs, and Delhi University. 

Among these, IIT Bombay had scored more top 100 positions than any other Indian Institution. It’s nine programs that are art and design; chemistry; computer science and information systems; chemical engineering; civil and structural engineering; electrical and electronic engineering; mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering; mineral and mining engineering; and materials. Are among the best 100 in the world. Last year they had eight programs in the top 100, chemistry is the new entrant. 

IIT Delhi has five programs among the top 100 meanwhile, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IISc Bangalore have got three programs each among the top 100. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore have ranked in the 51st post among the top 100 for business and management studies. India has improved its performance in the top 100s club along with bragging the world’s best 50 departments position in the world. 

The departments of IIT Bombay which ranked among the top 50 departments in the world in their respective fields are the departments of chemical engineering and mineral and mining engineering. 

The department of electrical and electronics engineering at IIT Delhi is at the top who scored the position. The development studies at Delhi University and mineral and mining engineering at IIT Kharagpur are also on the list. 

Last year, there were only three Indian Departments were there in the list that are, mineral and mining engineering departments at IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur and development studies at Delhi University. 

According to the statement on India’s performance released by QS Wednesday, “The rankings indicate India’s particular strength in the Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, and in Engineering disciplines. The subject tables featuring the highest levels of Indian representation are: Chemistry (20 Indian universities ranked); Computer Science & Information Systems (20); Physics & Astronomy (18); Biological Sciences (16); Electrical Engineering (15); Chemical Engineering (14); and Mechanical Engineering.” 

The world’s best-performing institution with 12 of its departments being ranked number one at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT is followed by Harvard University and the University of Oxford, which are the world’s number one for 11 and 8 subjects respectively. 

QS World University Ranking is done by subject calculate performance that is based on four parameters- academic reputation, employer reputation, research impact (citations per paper) and the productivity of an institution’s research faculty.
