UGC Introduces One-Year PG Courses Under NEP 2020
Big news for students planning to pursue higher studies. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made a major decision under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). Universities and higher education institutions (HEIs) across the country will now be able to launch a one-year postgraduate (PG) programme through open and distance learning (ODL).
The Commission has also outlined new regulations. The one-year programme will be of most benefit to students who wish to study while working, or who are unable to attend college. UGC Issues New Regulations for One-Year PG Courses
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has stated in a circular issued on 28 July 2026 that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, eligible universities will now be able to launch a one-year postgraduate programme in online and ODL modes. However, for this, the institution must already be recognised by the UGC to run a year-long PG programme in the same subject.
Who Is Eligible for One-Year PG Courses?
Eligibility criteria for the one-year PG course have also been established. Only students who have completed a four-year bachelor's degree are eligible for admission to this course.
Have met all the eligibility criteria for the relevant course.
If it is a professional course such as an MBA, MCA, or PGDM, then the additional qualifications as set by the relevant regulatory body must also be met.
Which universities will be permitted to start the course?
Not every university will be able to launch this course. Only those Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that already have permission from the UGC to run two-year PG programmes in an online/ODL mode will be able to run it. These must comply with all the rules of the NEP 2020 and the UGC. Those whose competent academic bodies (BoS, Academic Council, Executive Council, etc.) Approve this course.
What are the UGC's conditions?
One-year PG programmes must be in accordance with the NEP 2020 and UGC guidelines.
This course will only be launched in an online or ODL mode if a two-year PG programme in the same subject is already recognised.
Admission will be restricted to students who hold a four-year honours bachelor's degree.
Professional courses will be subject to the regulations of the relevant regulatory bodies.
The syllabus, credit system, assessment, and all other academic standards will be in accordance with UGC regulations.
