Join Indian Navy after Graduation - Indian is a maritime nation as it has a huge coast line. Its coast line is more than 7500 km. We also have an abundant oceanic wealth comprising a large number of island territories and vast sea bed area. Thus more than one third of our border is the water border. You will be surprised to know that over 97 % of our national trade is carried by sea routes! This huge national resource and trade routes needs protection Thus Indian Navy is vitally required to  safeguard this. Indian Navy is always called upon in times of distress and natural disaster such as floods, droughts, cyclones, earthquakes etc for rescue and relief operations.

There are many ways of joining Indian Navy as an officer. One can join NDA at Khadakvasla or Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala after class 12. However, one can join Indian Navy after graduation too. In this article I describe various routes of joining Indian Navy after graduation.

CDS Exam Route
CDS or Combined Defence Service Examination is an exam twice every year. This exam is conducted by the UPSC. CDS Exam is aimed to select officers for Indian Army, Navy and Air Force after graduation. Only men can apply for Navy through this exam. This exam is a written exam and is followed by Staff Selection Board or SSB interviews. On being successful in CDS exam, candidates can choose Indian Navy, based on their marks and available seats.

CDS Exam details
•    Written exam followed by SSB
•    It is for Men only
•    It has three papers consisting of General awareness, English and Mathematics
•    One has to be between 19-22 years of age.

Educational Qualification Eligibility
•    B.Sc. with Physics & Mathematics or
•    Bachelor of Engineering

The exam is usually notified in June and December and exam fall in the months of August and February
   
After selection one gets a permanent commission in the Indian Navy as an officer

UES Entry Route
Students are taken in Indian Navy as a Short Service Commissioned officers. UES means University Entry Scheme for entry into Indian Navy after graduation. Male students of pre-final and final year of engineering colleges can apply for this entry. This recruitment by UES is for a number of branches like General Services, Executive entry etc. Women and Men can both apply for Naval Architecture Branch. Details of these specific branches and commission types vary and are always mentioned in the advertisements.

Admission Details
•    Preliminary campus interviews is held in various college campuses.
•    Successful candidates have to go through SSB
•    Men and Women according to the Navy Branch

Educational Qualification
•    B.Tech or BE final/pre-final year with 60% aggregate in all papers, with physics and mathematics at 10+2.
•    Candidate must be between 21 – 24 of age.

The admission is notified in the month of Approximately around July)

Selections as officers will vary as per branches and may be permanent or Short Service commission

Graduate Direct Entries Route
There are many other jobs and posts in Navy, which require a minimum of graduation as educational qualifications. Graduates and above can apply. These vacancies are for branches like IT, Logistics, Administration, Observer, Pilot, Education etc.

Admission Details
These are notified by Indian Navy from time to time through advertisements throughout the year.
It’s a direct entry, based on graduation cut-off.
After selection, candidates will have to clear SSB
Educational qualifications required vary for different branches.
Age requirements vary based on the post
Both Men and Women can apply for both SSC and PC.

It is imperative to mention that all these above selections are valid based on Medical Fitness tests, These tests and  after standards are very rigid and fixed. Thus, getting into Indian Navy as officers is possible with the above mentioned routes.
