AICTE has reduced 1.5 lakh engineering and management seats in old institutes and has added 1.4 lakh additional seats in new institutes. Seats have been reduced due to shut down of various institutes, strict action by the AICTE or failure of some institutes to get their renewal.
According to AICTE, approval process for 2020-2021 has seen a lot of changes as compared to the previous year's approval process. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown and its extension, the approval process saw significant delay. Some AICTE approved colleges did not seek approval this year as they were having seats vacant since the past 5 years which made it difficult for them to continue.
For maintaining the quality of technical education, AICTE had decided that they will not permit opening of any new pharmacy and engineering colleges until the academic year 2021-22. AICTE has also restricted the addition of new seats in the existing colleges. Institutes are allowed to admit students in the existing seats only.
