Delhi Deputy CM has announced that he would like to form a new board for Delhi that would function independently of CBSE, however, it would not be a replacement for the latter. This board is meant to work as a preparation center for students for competitive exams such as JEE and NEET.
CBSE board students have always faced the challenge of preparing for both their board exams as well as competitive exams. This used to result in many students choosing to go for “non-attending batches” in school to be able to attend coaching centers more effectively. However, this new board will help students to prepare for both exams without the need to miss school as its curriculum would be centered around the competitive entrance exams.
Sisodia – Delhi’s Education Minister told that this idea was held under discussion back in 2015, but it was put on hold while the government strived to enhance the infrastructure of schools. Since the goal is now completed, the idea of the new education board can be brought back.
There are several questions that students, parents, and teachers have about the new board, but the most important one seems to be – how would this new board be different from CBSE. To answer this, Sisodia has stated that the new board will be following a grade-based curriculum that is similar to the schools in the US. This system will allow students to pursue the subjects they prefer, and the board will keep track of their grades for separate subjects. This will also keep students a lot more interested in their curriculum since they will be studying the subjects they chose. This rule will probably not be applied to subjects that are compulsory for their chosen stream and competitive exam.
He also stated that grades will be introduced in a subject-wise format and it will form the basis of the new curriculum. As an example, science subjects would be divided into four categories – for engineers, doctors, sportsmen, and for humanitarians. He further elaborated saying that if a child wishes to become a journalist or a reporter, he can take A grade language subjects, and C grade Science subjects to be well versed with the basics of science while also being trained with the subject related to his profession of choice.
This announcement is a surprise for the education world to be sure, but a welcome one. This makes it hard to predict the impact this will have on the education standards of Delhi; however, it does sound like a boon for students who wish to secure a rank in the top 100 of the entrance exams. This will help them to do so without missing school or having to drop a year for crash course preparation after Class 12.
If you have doubts regarding this new board, do not worry as this will take quite some time to begin. More information regarding this will be published in Sisodia’s autobiography – Shiksha.
