Grace Marking to be done in Final year online MCQ exam of Mumbai University

Giving grace marks in an online exam that too an MCQ based test may be debatable, but many principals say that it is necessary as it is the first-time students are giving their exams in an online mode. Nearly 5-10% of students have failed the backlog exams. When the question paper is based on descriptive answers, the college principal said the success rate helps decide the difficulty level and the grace marks. But in MCQ format, the questions are objective, and hence there is no need for grace marks. But since it will be the first time for the students in such a format and the exam being online, there is a scope for glitches; it is fair to give students grace marks.

Another suburban college teacher said that the MCQ exams are entirely different from what the students were preparing for; they can either score full marks or zero per question. Students might also have forgotten essential concepts in all the lockdown hassle in the past few months.

As stated by the University ordinance, grace marks are given to students who have cleared the exam. They are not more than 1% of the aggregate and not more than 5 in any subject.

Another Principal said that after the evaluation of answer sheets is done, the draft result is prepared, examiners decide the grace marks based on the paper's difficulty level.
