Distance education programmes in Hotel Management and Real Estate have been prohibited by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
A recent official order stated, “In accordance with communication received from various regulatory bodies, programmes in Hotel Management, Culinary Studies and valuation of Real Estate, will not be recognised from academic session 2019-20 and onwards.”
Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programme during the recognition period, however, will stay recognised till the completion of the programme even if the university does not have recognition for further years but in the case that the programme is offered in accordance to UGC norms and territorial jurisdictions.
The Open and Distance Learning Regulations in 2017 was notified by the UGC in 2017, according to which medicine, engineering, and architecture, which are professional programmes are not to be permitted in distant mode. The commission had prohibited grant distant degree programmes in agriculture later on. Check UGC Net June 2020 here
The Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) was requested for hand-holding such institutions to protect the interest of students who are already enrolled.
The commission decided to extend the admission timelines in its recent meeting.
The UGC order stated “Since in India the rainy season continues till August-September every year and admission in conventional programmes end in August, the schedule for admission in ODL programmes will henceforth be as follows–for academic session beginning in January the last date would be February end and for the session beginning in July the admission process would end in September.”
