Magic of being a Dancer and a Choreographer in India

Dance as an art form is an exquisite and delightful experience to watch. Dance is as old as existence of humans on this planet. The proof is in various rock carvings discovered at archaeological sites all over the world. Dance and music go hand in hand. Today, dance and music still remain the Centre piece of entertainment industry.

Dancing as a career was never quite accepted as a decent career in India until very recently though dance existed as an art form and a career since the ancient times. The paradox was that Indian culture and heritage always celebrated and appreciated dance, its acceptance as a career has happened only in recent times. The reasons for this mindset change is increasing popularity of music globally, video music, need for a healthy lifestyle and positive impact of children on behavioral development of children.

What is choreography? It is the plan a choreographer makes on paper as she plans the complex movements and steps to be executed by the dancers. It is extremely required when more than one person is dancing and is particularly important in musical theater, ballet, opera, and dance recitals. Simply put, choreography is used to design dances that are intended to be performed on a stage or in films.

Skills required to succeed as a dancer or a choreographer includes knowledge of various dance form, ability and fitness, flexibility and strength as well ability to learn from the teachers. There is such a vast variety of dances to learn from. Within India there are various dance forms including Kathakali, Bharat Natyam, Giddha, Bhangra and many more folk dances. Then there are very popular contemporary dance forms including Ballet, Waltz, Fox trot, Salsa and Disco. Each country has dances, which are distinct and different from others; there is so much to learn.

Many students after class 12 want to take up learning the science of dance and choreography in its various forms. Many learning opportunities are available to do so. There are many undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma programs available to join.

Its a good informative writeup! There are many small schools teaching dance across india. Dancing is also taught by many individual teachers too. But for a degree, one has to join formal courses and study.
