What You Can Expect from a Career in Computer Vision

The terms of computer vision and image processing have become quite popular in everyday language. However, most people who use these terms aren’t very familiar with the difference between them. This is true for almost everyone who hasn’t worked in these fields. Now, with the rise of deep learning and neural networks, tons of professionals want to work in the fields of image processing and computer vision and image processing.

However, before taking up a career in any field, it is important to know about it. While computer vision is sometimes confused as a sub-part of image processing, it is actually the other way around. Let’s take a look at both of these individually.

Image Processing

Image processing is a term that includes all the functions that can be used on a single picture. Since the pictures are made using single frames as various layers, the output of the functions depends on the layer it is applied to.

Most of image processing functions exist to produce a copy of the original image which is completely modified for ideal performance. If a filter is used to alter it, it is treated as an image processor. This may be able to do various things to the image such as colorizing it, blurring a part of it, or render some additional objects on the image. A common example of image processing is the use of Adobe Photoshop. This is a product that is used to alter images in order to ensure that the final product is more appealing to the eyes.

Computer Vision

Computer vision is a branch of subjects which can commonly be defined as the ability of a computer to understand any given visual input. This may not necessarily be a still image, as computer vision also works with videos. This cannot be accomplished as a sole solution, but rather as a combination of various technologies that combine as one.

If you wish to choose a career in this field, you would probably deal with neural networks and convolutional neural networks. Both of these would require you to work hard and design machine learning algorithms that are highly effective at identifying some objects in the surroundings. This can be a very interesting career course for some people who wish to deal in future-ready technologies such as facial recognition, self-driving cars, and even automated home robots. The applications are limitless if you choose it as your career path.
