Stream Selection After Class 10: Choosing The Right Optional Subject For CBSE 12th Board

Selecting an additional subject out of the available options can be a stressful process for the students. It is important to pick the correct stream as per the interest because the future choices will be further based on it. CBSE provides an option to the students to add one subject to their chosen stream. Therefore to give a better picture, the details of stream vise optional subjects are listed below.

 Subject Descriptions:

1.   Psychology: This subject is a deep study of the human mind and behavior. It offers various career opportunities in Schools, Hospitals, Counselling Centres, MNC’s, NGO’s, etc. This subject can be chosen as an option with any of the 4 streams. Students can further opt for higher studies in this subject as it opens various fields such as Aviation Psychology, Sports Psychology, Behavioural Economics, Forensic Psychology, etc.

2.      Home Science: It is a combination of both arts and science. It involves a theory of better living and enhancing the well being of society. This subject is in huge demand in the current situation. Home Science covers broad areas related to health, diet, interior designing, food preservation, human development, etc. Several sectors provide job opportunities in this field, such as hotels, hospitals, the fashion industry, retail, social work, etc. If students don’t want to make a career in this subject, still they can opt for it as it is a light subject with not much burden to study.

3.  Mathematics: This is a universal subject that is applicable in all fields and careers. From being an architect to an accountant, mathematics is used in every field. This is a prominent subject for most of the competitive exams after 12th, such as JEE, BBA entrances, CAT, CLAT, and many more.

4.   Economics: It is always good to know and understand the economy of the world. This subject has a huge demand and enfolds multiple career options in the future. Economics is a broad study linked to the country, employment and unemployment, rise and fall in the commodities prices, and how the government, businesses, and individuals allocate the available resources in the society. The subject is based on logic and applications. Economics requires a deep understanding and implementation of the concepts. Students need to focus on the basics of Maths and Statistics as well while studying this subject.

5.  Computer Science: This subject offers to learn to code and develop software. It fits really well with the PCM, and Non-Medical students who want to pursue software engineering or computer applications can choose this subject. Students gain knowledge about data structures, programming methodologies, programming languages such as C, C++, Java, Oracle, Python, etc. Students from Humanities and Commerce can choose Informatics Practices as their 5th subject. Topics covered under this subject are the basics of computer application, database management system, programming languages such as SQL, Oracle, JAVA for problem-solving, and e-learning.

6.   Biotechnology with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Maths (PCM/PCB Stream): This field combines biology and technology in various areas such as medicine, agriculture, environment, pharmaceuticals, etc. This subject is mostly related to the research sector and offers various opportunities in government and private jobs.

7.  Fine Arts/ Physical Education with Science/ Commerce / Humanities: Students interested in art/design and sports can choose this subject. Some of the universities provide 15% relaxation in cut-offs to the exceptional students in extracurriculars.

8.  Legal Studies with Humanities/ Commerce: This subject will enhance the law education.  It will help to develop practical skills in critical reading, critical thinking, logical ability, legal aptitude, and so on. Students need to do a 5-year integrated program in law to make a profession in this field.

9.  Media Studies with Humanities: Media represents a powerful role in the modern world. Picking this subject would shape a career in the field of Mass Communication and Journalism. This subject includes the fundamentals of communication and the basics of filmmaking, advertising, editing, marketing, etc.

 Conclusion

Students need to choose the 5th subject intelligently. These subjects can open up multiple options for after class 12th. Therefore it is better to understand the importance of the subject before deciding on the one.
